Basic wages

Basic wages, means all emoluments which are earned by an employee while on duty or on leave or on holidays with wages in either case in accordance with the terms of the contract of employment and which are paid or payable in cash to him, but does not include-(i) the cash value of any food concession; (ii) any dearness allowance (that is to say, all cash payments by whatever name called paid to an employee on account of a rise in the cost of living), house-rent allowance, overtime allowance, bonus commission or any other similar allowance payable to the employee in respect of his employment or of work done in such employment; (iii) any presents made by the employer. Fifteen day's wages, In any factory it is well known that an employee never works and could never be permitted to work for all the 30 days of the month. Wages, if the remuneration is to be paid daily or weekly, it can be called wages. But when it is monthly remuneration payable on the last day of the month or after that date, and when the remuneration considering the general standards of payments is fairly high, then it has to be understood as salary, K.V.V. Remuneration

Remuneration, 'remuneration' is only a mere formal version of payment, Bala Subrahmanya Rajaram v. B.C. Patil, AIR 1958 SC 518: (1958) SCR 1504.Payment; compensation, Black's Law Dictionary, 7th Edn., p. 1298.The word 'remuneration' must be given its meaning with reference to the context in which the word occurs in the statute. Minimum wage

Minimum wage. The Trade Boards Act, 1909, established for the first time a minimum wage in certain trades. The (English) Coal Mines (Minimum Wage) Act, 1912, made provision for the settlement of minimum rates of wages for workmen employed underground in coal mines. The principle has been extended to many industries during the war and after, and to agriculture by the Corn Production Act,1917 (repealed).
