The spark in Chintamani
Lakshman Srikanth watched advocates waste hours on books and clunky software - and imagined Google-simple search for Indian law.
SooperKanoon carries forward a mission that began in 2008 as LegalCrystal: put the complete library of Indian law at every advocate’s fingertips — simple, trusted, and built for real practice.
Not a pitch-deck idea. A response to evenings spent hunting precedents — and software that made it worse.
“We want every advocate in every nook and corner of India to use LegalCrystal.”
— The original mission that still drives SooperKanoon
In Chintamani — a town eighty kilometres from Bangalore — Lakshman Srikanth grew up in a family of advocates. His father, Adv. D.L. Prasad, ran a century-old office; his mother, Adv. Rekha Prasad, poured her domain expertise into what the product would need to become. When a sales rep installed legal research software that took roughly ten clicks and returned little of value, Lakshman — the family’s “computer guy” — felt the sting personally. Searching books was faster.
That was the moment LegalCrystal was born in his mind: Indian law searched the way Google searches the web — one phrase, one click, the point of law you need. Research began in March 2008. He spoke with advocates frustrated by existing tools, structured the data, and iterated through betas until the dream matched the demo.
On 21 June 2010, LegalCrystal launched at the High Court of Karnataka. Judges asked for demos the next day. Word of mouth carried it to Mysore, district courts, taluk courts, and the Karnataka Judicial Academy. Advocates who owned a computer bought it; those who didn’t yet still heard the promise. Years of shipping followed — Corporate features, headnotes, cloud notes — always measured against one question: does this make an advocate’s life easier?
In 2020, LegalCrystal was acquired by Mr. Narendra Soorabathula of Res Ipsa. The acquisition honored more than a product; it recognized over a decade of conviction that Indian legal research deserved better. Today SooperKanoon carries that same fire forward — with deeper coverage, modern search, and AI tools that accelerate research without replacing judgment.

Product launch at the High Court of Karnataka. Judges and advocates embraced one-click judgment search - word of mouth carried it across districts.
LegalCrystal Corporate brought richer search, headnotes, notes, and workflows for High Court advocates, firms, and in-house counsel.

1M+ judgments, Bare Acts, citations, and AI research tools - the same conviction, sharper technology, wider reach.
The same frictions that sparked LegalCrystal still slow research today: bulky books, fragmented portals, and tools that demand training instead of delivering answers. SooperKanoon exists to remove that friction.
Judgments, statutes, and references often live in separate books, portals, and folders - making research fragmented.
Finding the right precedent can mean hours of paging through volumes and repeating the same searches across sources.
Without citation-linked search, relevant judgments are easy to miss - even when they exist.
