Before you start
All search improvements are free - no login required. They apply on the homepage search box and the Cases search page.
Steps
- Start typing in the search box and pick an autocomplete suggestion, or press Enter with your own query.
- If results are sparse, click a spellcheck / "Did you mean?" link when shown.
- After results load, use Court and Year filters in the left sidebar - they stay pinned while you scroll.
- For tighter matching, put multi-word phrases in quotes, e.g.
"doctrine of legitimate expectation". - Still stuck? See Fix no search results.
Autocomplete
- Click the search box and start typing - e.g.
anticipatory bail. - A dropdown lists suggested completions based on popular queries and indexed terms.
- Click a suggestion or keep typing your own phrase.
- Press Enter to search.
Autocomplete helps you discover common legal phrasing and avoids typos in party names or act references.
Spellcheck ("Did you mean?")
When a query returns few or no results, SooperKanoon may show a corrected spelling link above the results. Click it to rerun the search with the suggested fix. This is especially useful for Latin terms, party names, and section abbreviations.
Sticky filters
After you run a search:
- Court and Year filters appear in the left sidebar.
- As you scroll through long result lists, the filter bar stays pinned at the top of the sidebar.
- On mobile, tap Filters to open the same panel in a drawer.

Ranking changes
Results now rank exact phrases and multi-word legal terms more strongly than before. Tips:
- Use quotes for precise phrases:
"legitimate expectation". - Combine act + section:
Section 138 Negotiable Instruments. - Remove court/year filters if results look too narrow.
Common mistakes
- Dismissing autocomplete because the first suggestion is not your exact query - you can still press Enter with your own text.
- Assuming zero results means the case is missing - try spellcheck suggestions, shorter keywords, or Citation Search.
