Before you start
Free for everyone - no login needed. Bare Acts covers Central and State legislation. You should know the act name (e.g. Indian Penal Code, Motor Vehicles Act) and ideally the section number (e.g. Section 302, Section 138). You can also search acts by keyword from the Acts search page.
Steps
- Open Bare Acts from the main menu.
- Choose Central Acts or pick a State jurisdiction to browse state legislation.
- For state acts, select a year if prompted - acts are grouped by enactment or amendment year.
- Click the act name to open it - sections appear in order with a navigable table of contents.
- Alternatively, use the acts search box: type the act name or
Section 420 IPCand submit. - Click the section number you need - the section page shows the full legal text and a sticky toolbar for PDF and navigation.
- Read the section text to confirm it is the right provision.
- Click List Judgments citing this section to open matching case results.
- Click any judgment title to read how courts interpreted that section.
What you'll see
The browse hub shows jurisdiction cards and year grids for state legislation. Act section pages display the statute heading, section number, complete section text, and a prominent List Judgments button linking to pre-filtered case search results. Long acts support in-page section navigation without loading every section at once.
Common mistakes
- Opening the wrong section number - IPC has hundreds of sections; double-check the number before listing judgments.
- Confusing the act search with case search - the acts area is for reading law; the "List Judgments" button bridges to cases.
- Expecting only Supreme Court results - the list includes High Court and tribunal judgments that cite the section.
Tips
- Research workflow: read the section text first, then list citing judgments, then filter by Court on the results page for Supreme Court authority.
- Pair this with Advanced Search - enter the act name and section in the act field for even tighter results.
- Use AI Studio on key judgments to understand how courts applied the section.
