Definition
Borough, originally a walled town or other fortified place. In the (English) Reform Act, 1832, by s. 79, the word means a town entitled to return a member to Parliament, or 'parliamentary borough,' and in the (English) Municipal Corporations Act, 1882, as also (by virtue of s. 15 of the Interpretation Act, 1889) in every Act passed in or after 1890 when used in relation to local government, a town incorporated for the purposes of internal government, and subject to the (English) Municipal Corporations Act, 1882, or 'municipal borough.'
