Whales
Legal definition for Indian law research
Definition
Whales, like sturgeon, are royal fish, which when taken belong as a right to the Crown; but the right to them may be vested in the lord of a manor or other subject by grant from the Crown, or by prescription, Williams on Commons, p. 292.
The whaling industry is regulated by the (English) Whaling Industry (Regulation) Act, 1934 (24 & 25 Geo. 5, c. 49). The Act prohibits the catching and treatment of whales within waters of the United Kingdom and provides for the licensing of whaling ships and whale-oil-factories.
