Verge or virge, the compass of the King's Court, which bounds the jurisdiction of the lord steward of the household; it seems to have been twelve miles about, Britt. 68. A quantity of land from fifteen to thirty acres, 28 Edw. 1. Also, a stick, or rod, whereby one is admitted tenant to a copyhold estate, O.N.B. 17. Hence, copyholders are some-times called 'tenants by the verge.'
