Definition :

Township, the district of a town, tithing, or vill, which three are of the same signification in law.-Steph. Com., vol. 1, Introduction. The township is the unit of the early constitutional machinery in England (Stubbs's Constitutional History of England, vol. 1, p. 82), and the boundaries of the parish, and the township or townships with which it coincides, are generally the same (ibid.), 'parish' being properly the ecclesiastical term, and 'township' the civil one.
