(2) It extends to the whole of India and applies also to citizens of India who are outside India SECTION 2 : Definitions In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,- (a) "departure," with its grammatical variations and cognate expressions, means departure from India by water, land or air; (b) "passport" means a passport issued or deemed to have been issued under this Act. (c) "passport authority" means an officer or authority empowered under rules made under this Act to issue passports or travel documents and includes the Central Government; (d) "prescribed" means prescribed by rules made under this Act; (e) "travel document" means a travel document issued or deemed to have been issued under this Act. THE MAJORITY ACT, 18751 [Act, No. 9 of 1875] [2nd March, 1875] PREAMBLE An Act to amend the law respecting the age of majority. WHEREAS, in the case of persons domiciled in2[India] it is expedient3[to specify the age of majority]; It is hereby enacted as follows:-- ________________________ 1. This act has been extended to Dadra and Nagar Haveli by REg. 6 of 1963, sec. 2 and Sch. I and the whole of the Union territory of Lakshadweep by Reg. 8 of 1965, sec. 3 and Sch. This Act has been extended to Pondicherry by Act 26 of 1968, subject to the following modification:-- In section 1 at the end, insert:-- "Provided the nothing contained in this Act shall apply to the Renoncants of the union territory of Pondicherry.". 2. Substituted by Act 3 of 1951, sec. 3 and Sch., for "Part a States and Part C States". 3. Substituted by Act 33 of 1999 sec. 2, for certain words (w.e.f. 16-12-1999).

1[3. Age of majority of persons domiciled in India (1) Every person domiciled in India shall attain the age of majority on his completing the age of eighteen years and not before. (2) In computing the age of any person, the day on which he was born is to be included as a whole day and he shall be deemed to have attained majority at the beginning of the eighteenth anniversary of that day.] ________________________ 1. WHEREAS, in the case of persons domiciled in [India] it is expedient 2["to specify the age of majority"]; It is hereby enacted as follows :-This Act has been declared, by notification under the Scheduled Districts Act, 1874(14 of 1874), S. 3(a), to be in force in the following Scheduled Districts, namely:- The Districts of Hazaribagh, Lohardaga and Manbhum, and Pargana Dhalbhum and the Kolhan in the District of Singbhum. [The Lohardaga District included at this time the present District of Palamau, which was separated in 1894. Lohardaga is now called the Ranchi District; Cal Gaz., 1899, Pt. I, p. 44]. See Gaz. of Ind., 1881, Pt. I, p. 504. All these' areas are in Bibar State fiow. Tarai (U.P.) See Gaz. of Ind., Pt. 1. p. 505. The Act has been extended to the new Provinces and Merged States by the Merged States (Laws) Act, 1949 (59 of 1949),S.3(1-1-1950), and to the States of Manipur, Tripura and Vindhya Pradesh by the Union Territories (Laws) Act, 1950 (30 of 1950), S. 3 (16-4-1950). This Act may be called the1[***] Majority Act, 1875. Local extent.-- 2[It extends to the whole of India3[except the State of Jammu and Kashmir]]; Commencement and operation.-- and it shall come into force and have effect only on the expiration of three months from the passing thereof. ________________________ 1.
