Title: Right to Confer Degrees

The right of conferring, granting, or issuing in the States degrees, diplomas, licences, certificates or other documents stating or implying that the holder, grantee or recipient thereof is qualified to practice western medical science, shall be exercisable only by the authorities specified in the Schedule, and by such other authority as the {Subs by the A.O.1937, for " G.G.in C."}[State Government] may, by notification {For notifications authorising certain institutions in the various States to grant certificates, diplomas, degrees, etc..see Gazette of India, l916, Pt.T, p.1155; ibid., 1917, pp.567.690, 2056, ibid.1918, p.128; ibid., 1921, p.1522; ibid., 1922, p.273.} in the Official Gazette, and subject to such conditions and restrictions as it thinks fit to impose, authorise in this behalf.

Title: Prohibition of Unauthorised Conferment of Degrees, Etc.

Save as provided by section 3, no person in the States shall confer, grant, or issue, or hold himself out as entitled to confer, grant, or issue any degree, diploma, licence, certificate or other document stating or implying that the holder, grantee or recipient is qualified to practice western medical science.

.....Nadu: Same as that of Assam.-T.N. Act 20 of 1940, section 2 (28-1-1941) SECTION 01: SHORT TITLE This Act may be called the Indian Medical Degrees Act, 1916. SECTION 02: DEFINITIONS In this Act "western medical science" means the western methods of Allopathic medicine, Obstetrics and Surgery, but does not include the Homoeopathic or Ayurvedic or Unani system of medicine1[and "State" means all2[the territories which immediately before the 1st November, 1956, were comprised] within Part A States and Part C States]. .....distinction, degree, diploma or privilege conferred on or granted to, any person by a resolution passed by a majority of the total members of the Syndicate and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members present and voting at the meeting, if such a person has been found to have obtained such a degree or diploma or certificate-fraudulently or has obtained admission through a false caste certificate. (2) No action under this section shall be taken against any person unless he has been given an opportunity to show cause against the action proposed to be taken. (3) A copy of the resolution passed by the Syndicate shall be immediately sent to the person concerned. (4) Any person aggrieved by the decision taken by the Syndicate may appeal to the Chancellor within thirty days from the date of receipt of such resolution. (5) The decision of the Chancellor on such appeal shall be final.

Indian Succession Act, 1925 Section 28

Title: Mode of Computing of Degrees of Kindred

Degrees of kindred are computed in the manner set forth in the table of kindred set out in Schedule I. Illustrations (i) The person whose relatives are to be reckoned, and his cousin-german, or first cousin, are, as shown in the table, related in the fourth degree; there being one degree of ascent to the father, and another to the common ancestor, the grandfather; and from him one of ascent to the uncle, and another to the cousin-german, making in all four degrees. (ii) A grandson of the brother and a son of the uncle, i.e., a great-nephew and a cousin-german, are in equal degree, being each four degree removed. (iii) A grandson of a cousin-german is in the same degree as the grandson of a great-uncle, for they are both in the sixth degree of kindred.

State Universities Act, 2000 (29 of 2001) Section 69

Title: Honorary Degrees

State: Karnataka

Year: 2000

(1) If not less than two thirds of the members of the Syndicate recommend that an honorary degree or other academic distinction be conferred on any person on the ground that he is in its opinion, by reason of eminent attainment and position, fit and proper to receive such degree or academic distinction, the Syndicate may recommend the same for the approval of the Chancellor for conferment of such degree on the person concerned. (2) The honorary degree or distinction may be conferred only in exceptional cases. It shall not be conferred as a matter of course. Only such of the persons who have contributed substantially to the advancement of Literature, Philosophy, Arts, Music, Painting or any other subject assigned to the Faculty of Arts, Science or Technology or conspicuous service rendered by them to the cause of education shall be identified for the purpose of grant of such honorary degrees. (3) A degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Honoris Causa may be conferred upon such persons in the branch of Science or Technology, Planning, Organising or Developing Scientific and Technological Institutions. University Grants Commission Act 1956 Section 22

Title: Right to Confer Degrees

(1) The right of conferring or granting degree shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees. (2) Save as provided in sub-section (1), no person or authority shall confer, or grant, or hold himself or itself out as entitled to confer or grant, any degree. (3) For the purposes of this section, "degree" means any such degree as may, with the previous approval of the Central Government, be specified in this behalf by the Commission by notification in the Official Gazette.

Hindu Succession Act, 1956 Section 13

Title: Computation of Degrees

(1) For the purposes of determining the order of succession among agnates or cognates, relationship shall be reckoned from the intestate to the heir in terms of degrees of ascent or degrees of descent or both, as the case may be. (2) Degrees of ascent and degrees of descent shall be computed inclusive of the intestate. (3) Every generation constitutes a degree either ascending or descending.
