Divorce [fr. divortium, Lat.], the dissolution of the marriage contract, grantable (after 31st December, 1937) to either a husband or wife under the (English) Matrimonial Causes Act, 1937 (1 Edw. 8 & 1 Geo. 6, c. 51), amending the (English) Judicature Act, 1925, for (a) adultery, (b) desertion for three years preceding petition, (c) cruelty, (d) incurable unsoundness of mind, and, on the wife's petition, for unnatural offences, subject to the statutory provisions. Law Reports. Reports of judgments of courts on points of law, published for the purpose of being used as precedents (see (REPORTS). Prior to 1865, these reports were all executed and published as mere private speculations, one reporter or pair of reporters being usually, though not always, accredited by the chief judge of each Court.
