Definition :

Kalan, means a word of somewhat loose connotation and in this sense, a covenant must be taken to provide for indemnification of the plaintiff against loss arising out of any dispute raised by the debtors in the matters of releasing the debts assigned to the plaintiff by the defendant, Jana Kumara v. Samanthabadra, (1944) 2 MLJ 371.

The word 'kalan' is used to denote different meanings indifferent contexts. It ordinarily mean 'encumbrances' but in appropriate context it connote a dispute, Ramamurthi Ayyar v. Kuppuswami Ayyar, AIR 1950 Mad 621.
