Definition :

Half-timer. A child, who, by the operation of the Factory and Education Acts, was employed for less than the full time in a factory or workshop, in order that he might attend some 'recognized efficient school.' It is now illegal to employ a child in a factory under the age up to which his parents are obliged to cause him to receive education (English) Education Act, 1918, s. 14; (English) Education Act, 1921, ss. 170 (13), 42, 46; (English) Children and Young Persons Act, 1933 (22 & 23 Geo. 5, c. 12), s. 46.

In England, a child excused from full time attend-ance at school under the factory and Workshops Act, 1908 so that the child could work part-time in a factory or workshop, Black's Law Dictionary, 7th Edn., p. 718.
