Definition :

Government, 'the Government', shall include both the Central Government and any State Government. [General Clauses Act, 1897 (10 of 1897), s. 3(23)]

That form of fundamental rules and principles by which a nation or state is governed; the state itself.

The structure of principles and rules determining how a State or organisation is regulated; the sovereign proper in a nation or state; an organisation through which a body of people exercise political authority; the machinery by which foreign prover is exercised, Black's Law Dictionary, 7th Edn., p. 703.

It means, in relation to any major port, the Central Government and, in relation to any other port, the State Government. [Dock Workers (Regulation of Employment) Act, 1948 (9 of 1948), s. 2 (d)]

The expression 'Government' in s. 21(12)(a), IPC, 1860 must either mean the Central Government or the Government of a State, R.S. Nayak v. A.R. Antulay, AIR 1984 SC 684: (1984) 2 SCC 183: (1984) 2 SCR 495.

The expression 'Government' used in proviso to Rule 3(b) of the National Human Rights Commission Chairperson and Members (Salaries, Allowances and Other Conditions of Service) Rules, 1993 has to be construed in the wider sense and the services rendered by a Judge or Chief Justice of a High Court must be held to be a service in connection with the affairs of the Union and as such the proviso to Rule 3(b) of the Rules would govern the case of such retired Judge or Chief Justice in determining the salary, which he would be entitled to, on being appointed as a Member of the Human Rights Commission, V.S. Mallimath v. Union of India, AIR 2001 SC 1455 (1459).

The expression government used in proviso to r. 3(b) of NHRC Chairperson and Members (Salaries, Allowances and Other Conditions of Service) Rules, 1993, shall be construed in a wider sense and the services in connection with the affairs of union and as such the proviso to r. 3(b) of the rules would govern the case of such retired judges or chief justices in determining the salary, which they would be entitled to, on being appointed as a member of the Human Rights Commission, V.S. Mallimath v. Union of India, (2001) 4 SCC 31.

Stipulation in para 1 of Form B and Form C for sell-ing the sugarcane 'at the minimum price notified by the 'Government'. In the absence of a clear indication to the contrary and in view of the 1954 order having been made under a state Act, the word 'Government' in the said stipulation, means the State Government and not the Central Govern-ment, [U.P. Sugarcane (Regulation of Supply and Purchase) Act, 1953 (24 of 1953), ss. 16, 17, 26 and UP Sugarcane Supply and Purchase Order, 1954, cls. 3, 3A, 4 & 5 and Appendix, Forms A, B & C]; U.P. Government, in relation to any Government security, means the Central or State Government issuing the security. [The Government Securities Act, 2006, s2(e)]
