Contemporanea expositio, it is a well-settled principle or doctrine which applies only to the construction of ambiguous language in old statutes, Doypock Systems (P.) Ltd. v. Union of India, AIR 1988 SC 782 (801).
The maxim contemporanea expositio as laid down
by Coke was applied to construing ancient
statutes, but not to interpreting Acts which are comparatively modern, Seniar Electric Inspector v. Laxminarayan Chopra, AIR 1962 SC 159 (163); See also Desh Bandhu Gupta v. Delhi Stock Exchange Association Ltd., AIR 1979 SC 1049 (1054).
