Churle [fr. ceorl, Sax.], a tenant at will, o free condition, who held lands of the thanes, on condition of rents and services: of two sorts; one who hired the lord's tenementary estate, like our farmers; the other that tilled and manured the demesnes (yielding work and not rent), and were called his sockmen or ploughmen, Spelm.
