Definition :

Censor. A person who regulates or prohibits the publication of any newspaper or the production of any play or any part thereof. There is ordinarily no censorship of the press in England; but by ss. 12 and 14 of the (English) Theatres Act, 1843 (6 & 7 Vict. c. 68), a copy of every new stage play must, before it is acted for hire at any theatre in Great Britain, be sent to the Lord Chamberlain of His Majesty's Household, who will issue a license for its production or forbid it for the 'preservation of good manners, decorum, or the public peace.'
