Definition
Accolade [fr. accoler, Fr., Collum amplecti, Lat.], a ceremony anciently used in knighthood, by the king putting his hand upon the knight's neck, Cowel. Greg. De Tours writes, that the kings of France, in conferring the gilt shoulder-belt, kissed the knight on the left cheek. The accolle, or blow, John of Salisbury assures, was in use among the Normans; by this William the Conqueror conferred the honour of knighthood upon his son Henry. It was first given with the naked fist, but afterwards with the flat of a sword.
