Definition :
Resident, an agent, minister, of officer residing in any distant place with the dignity of an ambassador; the chief representative of the government at certain native states in India. residents are a class of public ministers inferior to ambassadors and envoys; but, like them, they are under the protection of the law of nations.
Also, a tenant, who was obliged to reside on his lord's land, and not to depart from the same; called also homme levant et couchant, and in Normandy, resseant du fief, Leg. H. I.
