Queen [fr. cwen, Sax., a wife], a woman who is sovereign of a kingdom. The queen regent, regnant, or sovereign is she who holds the Crown in her own right, and such queen of England has the same powers, prerogatives, rights, dignities, and duties as if she had been a king, the law being so expressly declared in 1554 by 1 Mary, sess. 3, c. 1.
