Definition :
Poundage, a certain sum deducted from or added to each pound of any sum of money recovered by one person for another, to remunerate the person recovering the sum for his trouble.
The sheriff's poundage by sub-s. 1 of s. 20 of the (English) Sheriffs Act, 1887, in case of debts due to the Crown, is 1s. for the first hundred pounds recovered, and 6d. for every pound exceeding the first hundred; while in case of other debts it is as fixed by Rules under sub-s. 2. It is added to each pound of the debt, and may be levied with other expenses of execution over and above the sum due, by R.S.C. Ord. XLII, r. 15.
