Definition :

Marine Royal, a military force drilled as infantry, whose special province is to serve on board ships of war when in commission. The force was first established about the middle of the 18th century. When serving on board ship, their discipline is regulated by the (English) Naval Discipline Act (29 & 30 Vict. c. 109); and see 44 & 45 Vict. c. 38; when onshore, by an Act annually passed, called the Army (Annual) Act.
