THE MOTOR VEHICLES (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2001 [Act, No. 39 of 2001] [11th September, 2001] PREAMBLE An Act further to amend the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. BE it enacted by Parliament in the Fifty-second Year of the Republic of India as follows: -- 1. Short title and commencement - (1) This Act may be called the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2001. (2) It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette,1appoint. 2. Amendment of section 66 - In section 66 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (59 of 1988) (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act), in sub-section (3), clause (1) shall be omitted. 3. Amendment of section 67 - In section 67 of the principal Act, in sub-section (1), in clause (i), the proviso shall be omitted. _______________________________ 1. The appointed date is 27.09.2001 vide Notification No. 953 (E) dated 26.09.2001.

This sub-clause seeks to define the expression "dealer" so as to include a person who is engaged in the manufacture of motor vehicles or in building bodies for attachment to chassis.-S.O.R. Title : Driving Licences to Drive Motor Vehicles, Belonging to the Central Government

(1) Such authority as may be prescribed by the Central Government may issue driving licence valid throughout India to persons who have completed their eighteenth year to drive motor vehicles which are the property or for the time being under the exclusive control, of the Central Government and are used for Government purposes relating to the defence of the country and unconnected with any commercial enterprise. (2) A driving licence issued under this section shall specify the class or description of vehicle which the holder is entitled to drive and the period for which he is so entitled. (3) A driving licence issued under this section shall not entitle the holder to drive any motor vehicle except a motor vehicle referred to in sub-section (1). (4) The authority issuing any driving licence under this section shall at the request of any Slate Government, furnish such information respecting any person to whom a driving licence is issued as that Government may at any time require.

Title : Maintenance of State Registers of Motor Vehicles

(1) Each State Government shall maintain in such form as may be prescribed by the Central Government a register to be known as the State Register of Motor Vehicles, in respect of the motor vehicles in that State, containing the following particulars, namely:- (a) registration numbers; (b) years of manufacture; (c) classes and types; (d) names and addresses of registered owners; and (e) such other particulars as may be prescribed by the Central Government. (2) Each State Government shall supply to the Central Government 1 [if so desired by it] a printed copy of the State Register of Motor Vehicles and shall also inform the Central Government without delay of all additions to and other amendments in such register made from time to time. (3) The State Register of Motor Vehicles shall be maintained in such manner as may be prescribed by the State Government. ______________________ 1. Title : Alteration in Motor Vehicle
