Title: Power to Reduce, Remit or Compound Duties

.....being in force, no reduction or remission of stamp duty shall be allowed unless it is notified in accordance with sub-section (1)]. 6 [(2) Every rule or order published under clause (a) of sub-section(1) shall be laid as soon as may be after it is published before each House of the State Legislature while it is in season for a total period of thirty days which may be comprised in one session or in two successive sessions, and if before the expiry of the session in which it is so laid or the session immediately following both Houses agree in making any modification in the rule or order or both Houses agree that the rule or order should not made, the rule or order shall thereafter have effect only in such modified form or be of no effect, as the case may be; so however that any such modification or annulment shall be without prejudice to the validity of anything previously done under that rule or order.] B.-Of Stamps and the made of using them ________________________ 1.Substituted by Act No. 5 of 1988, w.e.f. 1-4-1998 for the words" reduce or remit, whether prospectively or retrospectively" 2. Title: Power to Suspend or Remit Sentences

.....sentenced, it is presented through the officer in charge of the jail; or (b) where such petition is made by any other person, it contains a declaration that the person sentenced is in jail. (6) The provisions of the above sub-sections shall also apply to any order passed by a Criminal Court under any section of this Code or of any other law which restricts the liberty of any person or imposes any liability upon him or his properly. (7) In this section and in section 433, the expression "appropriate Government" means, (a) in cases where the sentence is for an offence against, or the order referred to in sub-section (6) is passed under, any law relating to a matter to which the executive power of the Union extends, the Central Government; (b) in other cases the Government of the State within which the offender is sentenced or the said order is passed.

Arbitration Act, 1940 [Repealed] Section 16

Title: Power to Remit Award

Year: 1940

(1) The Court may from time to time remit the award or any matter referred to arbitration to the arbitrators or umpire for reconsideration upon such terms as it thinks fit, - (a) where the award has left undetermined any of the matters referred to arbitration, or where it determines any matter not referred to arbitration and such matter cannot be separated without affecting the determination of the matters referred; or (b) where the award is so indefinite as to be incapable of execution; or (c) where an objection to the legality of the award is apparent upon the face of it. (2) Where an award is remitted under sub-section (1) the Court shall fix the time within which the arbitrator or umpire shall submit his decision to the Court: Provided that any time so fixed may be extended by subsequent order to the Court. (3) An award remitted under sub-section (1) shall become void on the failure of the arbitrator or umpire to reconsider it and submit his decision within the time fixed.

Constitution of India Article 72

Title: Power of President to Grant Pardons, Etc., and to Suspend, Remit or Commute Sentences in Certain Cases

(1) The President shall have the power to grant pardons, reprieves, respites or remissions of punishment or to suspend, remit or commute the sentence of any person convicted of any offence-- (a) in all cases where the punishment or sentence is by a Court Martial; (b) in all cases where the punishment or sentence is for an offence against any law relating to a matter to which the executive power of the Union extends; (c) in all cases where the sentence is a sentence of death. (2) Noting in sub-clause (a) of clause (1) shall affect the power conferred by law on any officer of the Armed forces of the Union to suspend, remit or commute a sentence by a court martial. (3) Nothing in sub-clause (c) of clause (1) shall affect the power to suspend, remit or commute a sentence of death exercisable by the Governor1[***] of a State under any law for the time being in force. ________________________ 1. Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 Section 131

Title: Master to Give Facilities to Seaman for Remitting Wages

Where a seaman expresses to the master of the ship his desire to have facilities afforded to him for remitting any part of the balance of the wages due to him to a savings bank or to a near relative, the master shall give to the seaman all reasonable facilities for so doing so far as regards so much of the balance as is within the limits, if any, specified1in this behalf by the Central Government, but shall be under no obligation to give those facilities while the ship is in port if the sum will become payable before the ship leaves port or otherwise than conditionally on the seaman going to sea in the ship. ________________________ 1. Title: Power to Suspend, Reduce or Remit the Amount of Compulsory Deposit

Where the State Government has suspended payment of land-revenue, or reduced or remitted the amount of land-revenue, payable in any year in respect of any land, then, the Central Government may, by order, suspend payment of the compulsory deposit, or reduce or remit the amount of such deposit payable in that year under section 4 by a person falling under clause (a) of section 2.

Title: Power of State Government to Reduce, Excempt or Remit Tax

Title: Power of Inspector-general to Remit Fines

Government of India Act, 1858 [Repealed] Section 43

Title: Revenue Remitted to Great Britain, and Monies Arising in Great Britain to Be Paid to Secretary of State in Council

.....State in Council, to be applied for the Purposes of this Act; and all such Monies, except as herein-after otherwise provided, shall be paid into the Bank of England, to the Credit of an Account to be opened by the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, to be instituted "The Account of the Secretary of State in Council of India"; and all Monies to be placed to the Credit of such Account under this Act shall be paid out upon Drafts or Orders signed by Three Members of the Council, and countersigned by the Secretary of State or One of his Under Secretaries, and such Account shall be a public Account: Provided always, that the Secretary of State in Council may cause to be kept, from Time to Time, under the Care of their Cashier, in an Account to be kept at the Bank of England, such Sum or Sums of Money as they may deem necessary for the Payments now made out of Money under the Care of the Cashier of the said Company.

Estate Duty Act, 1953 [Repealed] Section 71

Title: Board May Remit Duty and Interest Outstanding After Twenty Years from Death

If after the expiration of twenty years from a death upon which estate duty became leviable any such duty remains unpaid the Board may if it thinks fit, on the application of any person accountable or liable for such duty or interested in the property, remit the payment of such duty or any part thereof or any interest thereon.
