.....Whereas it is expedient, in pursuance of that provision, to declare certain Courts in 2[India] to be Colonial Courts of Admiralty; It is hereby enacted as follows :- SECTION 01: TITLE AND COMMENCEMENT (1) This Act may be called The Colonial Courts of Admiralty (India) Act, 1891; and (2) It shall come into effect"- (a) If Her Majesty's pleasure thereon has been signified, by notification3in the4[Official Gazette]. on or before the first day of July, 1891. then on that day, or (b) If Her Majesty's pleasure thereon has not been so signified on or before that day, then on the date on which Her Majesty's pleasure shall be signified by such a notification as aforesaid. SECTION 02: APPOINTMENT OF COLONIAL COURTS OF ADMIRALTY The following Courts of unlimited civil jurisdiction are hereby declared to be Colonial Courts of Admiralty, namely:- (1) the High Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal; (2) the High Court of Judicature at Madras,5[and] (3) the High Court of Judicature at Bombay,6[*]7[* * * *] SECTION 03: CONSTRUCTION OF INDIAN ACTS REFERRING TO ADMIRALTY AND VICE ADMIRALTY COURTS The expressions "Court having Admiralty jurisdiction" and "Admiralty.....

THE MADRAS GENERAL CLAUSES ACT, 1891 THE MADRAS GENERAL CLAUSES ACT, 1891 [Act No. 1 of 1891] PREAMBLE An Act for further shortening the language used in ( Substituted by the Government of India (Adaptation of Indian Laws) Order, 1937.) [Madras Acts] and for other purpose. Whereas it is expedient to further shorten the language used in [Madras Acts made] and to make certain further provisions relating to those Acts. It is hereby enacted as follows.- Section 1 - Short title (a) This Act may be called The Madras General Clauses Act, 1891; and (b) It shall come into force on the first day of January, 1892. Section 2 - Section 2 Notwithstanding anything contained in the Madras General Clauses Act. 1867, the provisions of that Act shall not apply to this Act or to any (Madras Act) which may be passed subsequent to the commencement of this Act. Section 3 - Definitions In this Act and in every (Madras Act made) after the commencement of this Act, unless there be something repugnant in the subject or context.- (1) "Abet".- "abet" with its grammatical variations and cognate expressions, shall have the same meaning as in the Indian Penal Code. .....and staff of the Councils and their conditions of services; (j ) the powers exercisable by the said Councils in disputes involving customary laws ; and (k) any other matter in respect of which it is necessary to make rules for the constitution and proper functioning of the Councils. (2) Every rule made under this section shall be laid, as soon as may be after it is made, before the Nagaland Legislative Assembly while it is in session for a total period of seven days, which may be comprised in one session or in two successive sessions, and if, before the expiry of the session immediately following the Nagaland Legislative Assembly agree in making any modification in the rule or the Nagaland Legislative Assembly agree that the rule should not be made, the rule shall thereafter have effect only in such modified form or be of no effect as the case may be ; so however, that any such modification or- annulment shall be without prejudice to the validity of anything previously done under that rule. .....date appointed under sub-section (2) of section 1-for the coming into force of this Act; (b) "law" means so much of any Act, Ordinance, Regulation, rule, order or byelaw as relates to any of the matters enumerated in Lists I and III in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution; (c) "scheduled areas" means the areas specified in the Schedule. SECTION 03: ASSIMILATION OF LAWS (1) All laws which immediately before the appointed day extend to or are in force in, the scheduled areas shall on that day cease to be in force in the scheduled areas except as respects things done or omitted to be done before that day, and for the removal of doubts, it is hereby declared that section 6 of the General Clauses Act, 1897-shall apply in relation to such cesser as it applies in relation to the repeal of an enactment by a Central Act. (2) All laws which immediately before the appointed day extend to, or are in force in, the Khasi and Jaintia Hills District shall as from that day extend to and be in force in the scheduled areas.
