GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ACT, 1915-191 Preamble2 An Act to consolidate enactments relating to the government of India. whereas it is the declared policy of Parliament to provide for the increasing association of Indians in every branch of Indian administration, and for the gradual development of self-governing institutions, with a view to the progressive realisation of responsible government in British India as an integral part of the empire: AND WHEREAS progress in giving effect to this policy can only be achieved by successive stages, and it is expedient that substantial steps in this direction should now be taken: AND WHEREAS the time and manner of each advance can be determined only by Parliament, upon whom responsibility lies for the welfare and advancement of the Indian peoples: AND WHEREAS the action of Parliament in such matters must be guided by the co-operation received from those on whom new opportunities of service will be conferred, and by the extent to which it is found that confidence con be reposed in their sense of responsibility: AND WHEREAS concurrently with the gradual development of self-governing institutions in the provinces of India it is.....

Title: In Case of Vacancy in the Office of Governor General, and No Successor Upon the Spot, the Ordinary Members of Council Next in Rank to Act as Governor General

* * *1 if any vacancy shall hap­pen in the office of governor general of India when no provisional or other successor shall be upon the spot to supply such vacancy, then and in every such case2 the ordinary member of council next in rank to the said governor general shall hold and execute the said office of governor general of India 3 * * * until a successor shall arrive or until some other person on the spot shall be duly appointed thereto; and every such acting governor general shall, during the time of his continuing to act as such, have and exercise all the rights and powers of governor general of India, and shall be entitled to receive the emoluments and advantages appertaining to the office by him supplied, such acting governor general foregoing his salary and allowance of a member of council for the same period. _________________________ 1. Enacting words repealed (U.K.), 51&52 Vict., c. 57 (S.L.R.). 2. The Vice-president appointed under 9 Edw. 7, c. 4, Section. 4, shall be deemed to be such member. 3. Title: Provision in Case of a Vacancy in the Office of Governor of Any of the Subordinate Presidencies and No Successor on the Spot

Title: Cash Balance of the Company at the Bank to Be Transferred to the Secretary of State in Council

Such Amount of Money as at the Time of the Commencement of this Act may be standing to the Credit of the East India Company at the Bank of England shall be transferred by the Governor and Company of the Rank of England to the Credit of the Account to be opened in the Name of the Secretary of State in Council as aforesaid.
