Any Police Officer or officer of the Motor Vehicles Department, in uniform, not below such rank as may be prescribed by the State Government in this behalf, may require the driver of any motor vehicle in any public place to stop such vehicle and cause it to remain stationary so long as may reasonably be necessary for the purpose of satisfying himself that the amount of the tax due in accordance with the provisions of this Act in respect of such vehicle has been paid.

Title: Duty of Driver to Stop in Certain Cases

(1) The driver of a vehicle or animal shall cause the vehicle or animal, as the case may be, to stop and to remain stationary so long as may be reasonably necessary, (a) when required to do so by any police officer in uniform, or (b) when the vehicle or animal is involved in the occurrence of an accident to a person, animal or vehicle or of damage to any property, whether the driving or management of the vehicle or animal was or was not the cause of the accident or damage, and he shall give his name and address and the name and address of the owner of the vehicle or animal to any person affected by such accident or damage who demands it, provided such person also furnishes his name and address. (2) The driver of a vehicle or animal shall, on demand by a person giving his own name and address and alleging that the driver has committed an offence punishable under section 19, give his name and address to that person.

.....in such vehicle, vessel or other conveyance. 1[(2) If such officer or servant has reason to suspect that any fee or other amount due under this Act has not been paid in respect of the notified agricultural produce taken out of or being transported in, the market area in any vehicle, vessel or other conveyance, he may seize so much of the notified agricultural produce as in his opinion would be sufficient to meet the amount of fee or other amount due and retain the same with him until the fee or other amount due is paid or for ten days, whichever is earlier. After the expiry of the period of ten days, if the fee or other amount due is not paid, the officer or servant shall dispose of the notified agricultural produce in public auction and adjust the sale proceeds towards the fee or other amount due. If the sale proceeds are more than the fee or other amount due, the excess amount shall, after deducting the charges incurred by the market committee, be refunded in the prescribed manner: Provided that in the case of perishable notified agricultural produce the officer or servant may dispose of the same before the expiry of the period of ten days if in his opinion such disposal.....

.....goods in the aircraft, vehicle or vessel or on the animal; (c) break open the lock of any door or package for exercising the powers conferred by clauses (a) and (b), if the keys are withheld. (2) Where for the purposes of sub-section (1) (a) it becomes necessary to stop any vessel or compel any aircraft to land, it shall be lawful for any vessel or aircraft in the service of the Government while flying her proper flag and any authority authorised in this behalf by the Central Government to summon such vessel to stop or the aircraft to land, by means of an international signal, code or other recognized means, and thereupon such vessel shall forthwith stop or such aircraft shall forthwith land; and if it fails to do so, chase may be given thereto by any vessel or aircraft as aforesaid and if after a gun is fired as a signal the vessel fails to stop or the aircraft fails to land, it may be fired upon; (b) it becomes necessary to stop any vehicle or animal, the proper officer may use all lawful means for stopping it, and where such means fail, the vehicle or animal may be fired upon.

Any officer authorised under section 42, may, if he has reason to suspect that any animal or conveyance is, or is about to be, used for the transport of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance1[or controlled substance], in respect of which he suspects that any provision of this Act has been, or is being, or is about to be, contravened at any time, stop such animal or conveyance, or, in the case of an aircraft, compel it to land and-- (a) rummage and search the conveyance or part thereof; (b) examine and search any goods on the animal or in the conveyance; (c) if it becomes necessary to stop the animal or the conveyance, he may use all lawful means for stopping it, and where such means fail, the animal or the conveyance may be fired upon. ______________________ 1. Any authorised officer may, if he has any reason to suspect that any conveyance or animal is being, or is about to be, used for the transportation of any commodity which is liable to confiscation under this Act and that by such transportation any provision of this Act has been, is being or is about to be, contravened, at anytime, stop such conveyance or animal or, in the case of an aircraft, compel it to land, and (a) rummage and search the conveyance or any part thereof, (b) examine and search any goods or materials in the conveyance or on the animal, (c) if it becomes necessary to stop any conveyance or animal, he may use all lawful means for stopping it and where such means fail, the conveyance or animal may be fired upon, and where he is satisfied that it is necessary so to do prevent the contravention of any provision of this Act, he may seize such conveyance or animal. Explanation. - Any reference in this section to a conveyance shall, unless the context otherwise requires, be construed as including a reference to an aircraft, vehicle or vessel.
