Preamble 1 - KARNATAKA OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ACT, 1963 THE1[KARNATAKA] OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ACT, 1963 [Act, No. 26 of 1963] [5th October, 1963] PREAMBLE An Act to provide for the adoption of Kannada as the language to be used forthe official purposes of the State and for continuance of the use of English fortransaction of business of the State Legislature. WHEREAS it is expedient to provide for the adoption of Kannada as the language to be used for official purposes of the2[State of Karnataka] and for continuance of the use of English for transaction of business of the State Legislature after the expiration of the period of fifteen years from the commencement of the Constitution; BE it enacted by the2[Karnataka] State Legislature in the Fourteenth Year of the Republic of India as follows:-- ______________________________________ 1.First Published in the Karnataka Gazette on the Tenth day of October, 1963. 2. THE KARNATAKA LOCAL AUTHORITIES (OFFICIAL LANGUAGE) ACT, 1981 [Act, No. 30 of 1981] [15th April, 1981] PREAMBLE An Act to provide for the adoption of Kannada as the language to be used for official purposes by all the local authorities within the State of Karnataka. WHEREAS by Karnataka Act 26 of 1963, Kannada was declared as the official Language of the State; WHEREAS by Notification No. DPAR 29 PCL 79 , dated 4th March 1980, the Government of Karnataka notified that Kannada shall be used for all official purposes by all State Government offices throughout the State; WHEREAS it is expedient to provide for the use of Kannada for all official purposes by the local authorities in the State; BE it enacted by the Karnataka State legislature in the Thirty second year of the Republic of India as follows:--

.....shall be accepted in the language of such minority and as far as possible replies thereto shall be given in that language; (ii) hand--outs and publicity material shall also be given in the language of such minority; (iii) notices of the local authorities shall also be published in the language of such minority. Explanation.-- In this section, 'local authority" includes a statutory corporation established by or under a law made by the State Legislature with respect to any of the matters enumerated in List II of the Seventh schedule to the Constitution, and a co--operative society registered under the Karnataka Co--operative Societies Act, 1959 (Karnataka Act 11 of 1959)

Title: English to Be Continued to Be Used for Official Purposes Until the Government Otherwise Directs

Notwithstanding anything in section 2 and without prejudice to the provisions of Articles 346 and 347 of the Constitution, the English language shall continue to be used for all the official purposes of the State for which it was being used before the commencement of this Act until the State Government, by notification under section 4, otherwise directs in respect of any official purpose specified in such notification.

Title: Notifications Issued Under Section 4 to Be Placed Before the Legislature

.....agree that the notification should not be issued, the notification shall thereafter have effect only in such modified form or be of no effect, as the case may be; so however, that any modification or annulment shall be without prejudice to the validity of anything previously done under that notification. NOTIFICATION S.O. 2731.--In exercise of the powers conferred by sub--section (2) of Section 1 of the Karnataka Official Language (Amendment) Act 1974 (Karnataka Act No. 27 of 1974), Government of Karnataka hereby appoints 1st February 1975 for the purposes of the said sub--section. By Order and in the name of the Governor of Karnataka, (M. SANKARANARAYANAN) Additional Secretary to Government, General Administration Department.
