GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ACT, 1915-191 Preamble2 An Act to consolidate enactments relating to the government of India. whereas it is the declared policy of Parliament to provide for the increasing association of Indians in every branch of Indian administration, and for the gradual development of self-governing institutions, with a view to the progressive realisation of responsible government in British India as an integral part of the empire: AND WHEREAS progress in giving effect to this policy can only be achieved by successive stages, and it is expedient that substantial steps in this direction should now be taken: AND WHEREAS the time and manner of each advance can be determined only by Parliament, upon whom responsibility lies for the welfare and advancement of the Indian peoples: AND WHEREAS the action of Parliament in such matters must be guided by the co-operation received from those on whom new opportunities of service will be conferred, and by the extent to which it is found that confidence con be reposed in their sense of responsibility: AND WHEREAS concurrently with the gradual development of self-governing institutions in the provinces of India it is.....

Title: Departure of Governor General Etc., for Europe, to Be a Resignation

.....a declaration in writing under hand and seal, delivered to the secretary for the public department of the presidency wherein he shall be, in order to its being recorded, shall be deemed or held as a resignation or surrender of his said office; Salary to cease on departure or resignation.--And if any such governor general or member of council of India shall leave the said territories, or if any governor or other officer whatever in the service of the said company shall leave the presidency to which he shall belong, other than in the known actual service of the said company, the salary and allowances appertaining to his office shall not be paid or payable during his absence to any agent or other person for his use; and in the event of his not returning, or of his coming to Europe, his salary and allowances shall be deemed to have ceased on the day of his leaving the said territories, or the presidency to which he may have belonged : Payment to representatives of officers dying during absence.--Provided that it shall be lawful for the said company to make such payment as is now by law permitted to be made to the representatives of their officers or servants who, having.....

Title: Payments in Respect of Salary of a Bishop of Madras or Bombay Dying While in Office

..... and when and so often as it shall happen that any such bishop shall depart this life while in possession of such office, and after the expiration of six calendar months from the time of his arrival in India for the purpose of taking upon him such office, then and in every such case there shall be payable, out of the territorial revenues from which the salary of the said bishop so dying shall be payable to his legal personal representatives over and above what may have been due to him at the time of his death a sum equal to the full amount of the salary of such bishop for six calendar months. ___________________________ 1. OPIUM ACT, 1857 OPIUM ACT, 1857 An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to the cultivation of the poppy and the manufacture of opium 2 [* *]. Preamble.-Whereas the existing law relating to the cultivation of the poppy and the manufacture of opium on account of Government is in some respects inconsistent with the practice which now obtains under agreement between the Opium Agents and the cultivators, and it is expedient that such in- consistency should be removed; And whereas it is also expedient3[* * *] that the laws for preventing the illicit cultivation of the poppy, and for regulating the cultivation of the poppy and the manufacture of opium on account of Government, should be consolidated and amended; It is enacted as follows:- This Act has been declared to be in force throughout the former Province of Bengal and the former North-Western Provinces except the Scheduled Districts by the Laws Local Extent Act, 1874 (15 of 1874),Sections 6and7. Title: Secretary of State to Divide the Council into Committees and to Regulate the Transaction of Business

It shall be lawful for the Secretary of State to divide the Council into Committees for the more convenient Transaction of Business, and from Time to Time to re-arrange such Committees, and to direct what Departments of the Business in relation to the Government of India under this Act shall be under such Committees respectively, and generally to direct the Manner in which all such business shall be transacted.

The Regulations and Practice now acted on by the Court of Directors on the Issue of Warrants or Authorities for the Payment of Money shall be maintained and acted on by the Secretary of State in Council of India under this Act until the same be altered by the Authority of Her Majesty in Council: Provided, that where a Warrant or Authority for the Payment of Money passes through the Audit Department at the East India House before Payment, it shall be counter-signed by such Officer or Officers of that Audit Department as the Secretary of State in Council may direct before Payment shall be made; and that Warrants or Authorities which have heretofore been signed by Two Directors of the East India Company shall, after the Commencement of this Act, be signed by Three Members of the Council of India.
