Cross-examination

Cross-examination, the examination of a witness by the opposite side, generally after examination in chief, but some times without such examination; as in the case of an examination on the voir dire, which is in the nature of a cross-examination (see VOIR DIRE); and also if one party calls a witness,and he is sworn, the other party may cross-examine him, although the party who has called him put no question at all to him. Some times questions in cross-examination are allowed by the judge after re-examination. See RE-EXAMINATION. Directors

Directors, persons appointed or elected according to law, authorized to manage and direct the affairs of a corporation or company. The whole of the directors collectively form the board of directors. Their powers, if the company be incorporated by Act of Parliament, are derived from its special Acts and ss. 90-100 of the (English) Companies Clauses Act, 1845; if the company be incorporated under the (English) Companies Act, 1929, see ss. 139 et seq., ibid. Entering short

Entering short. When bills not due are paid into a bank by a customer, it is the custom of some bankers not to carry the amount of the bills directly to his credit, but to 'enter them short,' as it is called, i.e., to note down the receipt of the bills, their amounts, and the times when they become due in a previous column of the page, and the amounts when received are carried forward into the usual cash column. Sometimes, instead of entering such bills short, bankers credit the customer directly with the amount of the bills as cash, charging interest on any advances they may make on their account, and allow him at once to draw upon them to that amount.
