Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 Section 140

Title: Wages Not to Depend on Freight

(1) The right to wages shall not depend on the earning of freight, and every seaman and apprentice who would be entitled to demand and recover any wages if the ship in which he has served had earned freight, shall, subject to all other rules of law and conditions applicable to the case, be entitled to demand and recover the same notwithstanding that freight has not been earned, but in all cases of wreck or toss of the ship, proof that the seaman has not exerted himself to the utmost to save the ship, cargo and stores shall bar his claim to wages. (2) Where a seaman or apprentice who would but for death be entitled by virtue of this section to demand and recover any wages dies before the wages are paid, they shall be paid and applied in manner provided by this Act with respect to the wages of a seaman who dies during a voyage.

Government of India Act, 1935 [Repealed] Section 140

Title: Salt Duties, Excise Duties and Export Duties

(1) Duties on salt, Federal duties of excise and export duties shall be levied and collected by the Federation, but, if an Act of the Federal Legislature so provides, there shall be paid out of the revenues of the Federation to the Provinces and to the Federated States, if any, to which the Act imposing the duty extends, sums equivalent to the whole or any part of the net proceeds of that duty, and those sums shall be distributed among the Provinces and those States in accordance with such principles of distribution as may be formulated by the Act. (2) Notwithstanding anything in the preceding sub-section, [one half, or such greater proportion as His Majesty in Council may determine]1, of the net proceeds in eaeh year of any export duty on jute products shall not form part of the revenues of the Federation, but shall be assigned to the Provinces or Federated States in which jute is grown in proportion to the respective amounts of jute grown therein. ________________________ 1. When a sentence of fine is imposed by a Force Court under section 49, a copy of such sentence signed and certified by the confirming officer, or where no confirmation is required, by the officer holding the trial may be sent to any Magistrate in India, and such Magistrate shall thereupon cause the fine to be recovered in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, as if it were a sentence of fine imposed by such Magistrate.

(1) With respect to the disposal of movable property belonging to Council the Chairperson may, in his discretion, dispose of by sale or otherwise, any movable property belonging to the Council not exceeding in value in each instance one thousand rupees, or such higher amount as the Council may prescribe, or let out on hire any movable property or grant a lease of any immovable property belonging to the Council including any right of gathering and taking fruits and the like, for a period not exceeding one year at a time; (2) In cases not covered by sub-section (1), the Chairperson may, with the sanction of the Council, lease, sell, let out on hire or otherwise transfer any movable property belonging to the Council.

Navy Act, 1957 Section 140

Title: Summary Punishment for Contempt of Court by Person Not Subject to Naval Law

When any person not subject to naval law commits an offence as is described in section 165 in the presence of a court-martial, such court-martial may take such person into custody and at any time before the rising of the court on the same day, if it thinks fit, take cognizance of the offence and sentence the offender to fine not exceeding two hundered rupees or in default of payment to simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one month, unless such fine shall be sooner paid.
