Oriental Gas Company Act ,1857 Section 27

Title: Interpretation

The following words and expressions used in this Act shall have the meanings hereby assigned to them, unless there be something in the subject or context repugnant to such construction (that is to say) :--- Words importing the singular number only shall include the plural number and words importing the plural number only shall include also the singular number. Words importing the masculine gender shall include females. The word "person" shall include a corporation, whether aggregate or sole. The word "street" shall include any square, court, or alley, highway, lane, road, thoroughfare, or public passage or place. The word "Magistrate" shall include any Magistrate of Police, and any joint Magistrate or other person lawfully exercising the powers of Magistrate, acting at or for the place or district where the matter requiring the cognizance of any such Magistrate arises.

Bombay General Clauses Act, 1904, (Maharashtra) Section 13

Title: Gender and Number

In all Bombay Acts 1[or Maharashtra Acts], unless there is anything repugnant in the subject or context, - (a) words importing the masculine gender shall be taken to include females; and (b) words in the singular shall include the plural, and vice versa. NOTES Expression "property" whether includes properties.-Section 13 of the Bombay General Clauses Act provides that unless there is any thing repugnant, the words in singular shall include the plural, and vice versa.-Rqjendra Singh Airen v. BOMBAY HINDU HEIRS' RELIEF ACT, 1866, (Maharashtra) Section 7

The term "debts," as used in this Act, shall be construed to include all liabilities arising out of any claims which could or might be enforced against a deceased Hindu himself if living, and for which a suit would lie against his representative. 1* * * _________________ 1 The rest of section7 which was as follows:-"and unless there be something in the context or subject refulgent to such construction, words importing the singular number shall include the plural number, and words importing the plural number shall be include the singular number and words importing masculine gender shall include females" was repealed by the Bombay General Clauses Act, 1886 (Bom. 3 of 1898).

SECTION 08: POWER TO ENTER BUILDINGS FOR ASCERTAINING QUANTITY OF GAS CONSUMED The Clerk, Engineer, or other officer duly appointed for the purpose by the said Company may, at all reasonable times, enter any buildings or place lighted with Gas supplied by the said Company, in order to inspect the meters, fittings, and works for regulating the supply of Gas, and for the purpose of ascertaining the quantity of Gas consumed or supplied; and if any person hinder such officer as aforesaid from entering and making such inspection as aforesaid at any reasonable time; he shall, for every such offence, forfeit to the said Company a sum not exceeding fifty rupees. SECTION 09: RECOVERY OF RENT DUE FOR GAS If any person supplied with Gas, or any person to whom any meter or fitting shall have been let for hire by the said Company neglect to pay the rent due for the same to the said Company, the said Company may stop the Gas from entering the premises of such person, by cutting off the service-pipes, or by such means as the said Company shall.....

.....1908, `India', means the territory of India excluding the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Under s. 2(e) of the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act, 1969, `India' means for the purposes of this Act the territories to which this Act extends (i.e., whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir). According to s. 2(27) of Customs Act, 1962, `India' includes the territorial waters of India. SECTION 19: "JUDGE" The word "judge" denotes not only every person who is officially designated as a Judge, but also every person, who is empowered by law to give, in any legal proceeding, civil or criminal, a definitive judgement or a judgement which, if not appealed against, would be definitive, or a judgement which, if confirmed by some other authority, would be definitive, or who is one of a body of persons, which body of persons is empowered by law to give such a judgement. Illustrations (a) A Collector exercising jurisdiction in a suit under Act 10 of 1859, is a Judge. (b) A Magistrate exercising jurisdiction in respect of a charge on which he has power to sentence to fine or imprisonment, with or without appeal, is a Judge. It is hereby enacted as follows.- Section 1 - Short title (a) This Act may be called The Madras General Clauses Act, 1891; and (b) It shall come into force on the first day of January, 1892. Section 2 - Section 2 Notwithstanding anything contained in the Madras General Clauses Act. 1867, the provisions of that Act shall not apply to this Act or to any (Madras Act) which may be passed subsequent to the commencement of this Act.
