COPYRIGHT ACT, 1957 COPYRIGHT ACT, 1957 [Act No. 14 of Year 1957, dated 4th. June, 1957] An Act to amend and consolidate the law relating to copyright Be it enacted by Parliament in the Eighth Year of the Republic of India as follows: - CHAPTER I: PRELIMINARY SECTION 01: SHORT TITLE, EXTENT AND COMMENCEMENT (1) This Act may be called the Copyright Act, 1957. (2) It extends to the whole of India. (3) It shall come into force on such date1 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint. SECTION 02: INTERPRETATION In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,- (a) "adaptation" means,- (i) in relation to a dramatic work, the conversion of the work into a non-dramatic work; (ii) in relation to a literary work or an artistic work, the conversion of the work into a dramatic work by way of performance in public or otherwise; (iii) in relation to a literary or dramatic work, any abridgement of the work or any version of the work in which the story or action is conveyed wholly or mainly by means of pictures in a form suitable for reproduction in a book, or in a newspaper, magazine or similar periodical; 2[* * *] (iv) in.....

Procedure for suits and decree pending in area withdrawn from Act " When any village or area is withdrawn from the operation of this Act, all suits pending in a village court therein shall be heard and determined, and all decrees passed by such court and remaining unexecuted shall be executed by the Civil Court which, if the suit were about to be instituted, would have jurisdiction to try it. Such suits shall be tried and such decrees shall be executed as suits instituted in, and decrees passed by, such civil court. 5. .....entitled to practice or an attorney entitled to act in the High Court at Madras shall be recognised as an advocate or an attorney entitled to practise or to act, as the case may be, in the High Court of Andhra. SECTION 32: PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE IN ANDHRA HIGH COURT Subject to the provisions of this Part, the law in force immediately before the prescribed day with respect to practice and procedure in the High Court at Madras shall, with the necessary modifications, apply in relation to the High Court of Andhra and accordingly that High Court shall have all such powers to make rules and orders with respect to practice and procedure as are immediately before the prescribed day exercisable by the High Court at Madras: Provided that any rules or orders which are in force immediately before the prescribed day with respect to practice and procedure in the High Court at Madras shall, until varied or revoked by rules or orders made by the High Court of Andhra apply with the necessary modifications in relation to practice and procedure in the High Court of Andhra as if made by that Court. Section 5 - Repeal of Section 30 of the principal Act Section 30 of the principal Act is hereby repealed. Section 6 - "Nagar Nigam" to be read instead of "Nagar Palika" In the Uttaranchal (The Uttar Pradesh Nagar Nigam Adhiniyam, 1959) (Amendment) Act, 2002 (Act No. 19 of 2002), wherever the word "Nagar Palika" occurs, it shall be read as "Nagar Nigam". Section 7 - Repeal and savings (1) The Uttarakhand (The Uttar Pradesh Nagar Nigam Adhiniyam, 1959) (Adaptation and Modification Order, 2002) Adaptation and Modification Order, 2007 (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008 is hereby repealed. (2) Notwithstanding such repeal, anything done or any action taken under the provisions of the principal Act as mentioned by the Ordinance referred to in sub-section (1), shall be deemed to have been done/or taken under the corresponding provisions of the principal Act as amended by this Act as if all the provisions of this Act were in force at all material times. Title: Power of the President to Adapt Laws

1[ 372A . Power of the President to adapt laws ( 1 ) For the purposes of bringing the provisions of any law in force in India or in any part thereof, immediately before the commencement of the Constitution (Seventh Amendment) Act, 1956 , into accord with the provisions of this Constitution as amended by that Act, the President may by order2made before the first day of November, 1957 , make such adaptations and modifications of the law, whether by way of repeal or amendment, as may be necessary or expedient, and provide that the law shall, as from such date as may be specified in the order, have effect subject to the adaptations and modifications so made, and any such adaptation or modification shall not be questioned in any court of law. ( 2 ) Nothing in clause ( 1 ) shall be deemed to prevent a competent Legislature or other competent authority from repealing or amending any law adapted or modified by the President under the said clause.] ________________________ 1. .....of India or of the export of the goods out of such territory, or (b) except in so far as Parliament may bylaw otherwise provide, after the 31st day of March, 1951, in the course of inter-State trade or commerce, and the provisions of this Act shall be read and construed accordingly.
