In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, (a) "calibration" means all the operations which are necessary for the purpose of determining the values of the errors of a weight or measure and, if necessary, to determine the other metrological properties of such weight or measure, and includes the actual fixing of the positions of the gauge-marks Or scale-marks of a weight or measure or in some cases, of certain principal marks only, in relation to the corresponding values of the quantity to be measured. (1) The Central Government shall cause to be prepared, for the purposes of this Act, as many sets of reference standards as it may think necessary and shall supply to each State Government as many sets of reference standards as it may think fit. Every false or unverified weight or measure, and every false package, used in the course of, or in relation to any inter-State trade or commerce and seized under section 29, shall be liable to be forfeited to the Central Government: Provided that such unverified weight or measure shall not be forfeited to Government if the persons from whom such weight or measure was seized gets the same verified and stamped within such time as may be prescribed.
