[Received the absent of the President of India on the 20th July, 1957 and was first published for general information in the Punjab Government Gazette (Extra- ordinary) dated the 29th July, 1957 ]
An Act to provide for the abolition of whipping as a punishment and to amend the existing State Laws for this purpose.
Be it by the Legislature of the State of Punjab in the Eighth Year of the Republic of India as follows :"
Short title
1. This Act may be called the Punjab Abolition of Whipping Act, 1957.
Abolition of whipping
2. (1) The punishment of whipping as provided in any law with respect to any of the matters specified whipping in the State and Concurrent Lists of the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India is hereby abolished.
(2) If at the commencement of this Act any sentence of whipping imposed upon any offender by a Court or other authority under any law referred to in subsection (1) has not been executed for any reasons, whether wholly or partially, the offender shall be dealt with in the manner provided in section 395 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, as if that section had not been repealed by the Abolition of Whipping Act, 1955 (Act No. 44 of 1955).
